The In between Months
Written by Sian Polhill-Thomas 16th Apr 2009As I nibble on my last Easter egg, I can’t help but think, Easter is kind of like Christmas. You get all excited during the preparation period, you find yourself spending hours, cooking, glazing, wrapping and hiding things. You kill yourself trying to forage the garden furniture from the shed to accommodate all the long lost relatives you have visiting but other wise wouldn’t really speak to. You spend a crazy amount of money on food, drink and last minute finishing touches that are essential to your table display! However in reality you spend the majority of the day sitting by the window watching the rain scatter the already soggy pavements, stuffing your self with an incomprehensible amount of chocolates, and come 8.30 your flat out, whilst Wallis and Grommet plays out on the box for a consecutive year running!
However not this Easter, this year was different…why…because it was sunny. People left their homes faster then you could say ‘Easter bunny’ and hit the motorway for a bank holiday get away. Others hosted garden parties; some took long peaceful walks through the countryside. Others spent the entire bank holiday hauled up in a beer garden! Me? I worked! I worked the entire Easter bank holiday weekend! However I wasn’t stuck behind a desk all Easter, I was fortunate enough to be outside, working on a enormous Easter Egg Hunt that spanned over four days, hosted by the National Trust, and sponsored by Cadbury’s, so it wasn’t completely awful. The hunt was set in a beautiful, Tudor manor, home to an abundance of ducks and their little ducklings. As the sun beamed down onto the stunning setting, the hunt got well and truly underway. As the children enjoyed the wealth of chocolate on offer, my attentions turned to what the adults were wearing and I noticed that people had no clue how to dress for our first real taste of sun.
Men were stood in long heavy leather coats, jeans and boots whilst eating a summer ice cream?! Woman were unsure whether it was time to replace their jeans with a summer dress, so decided to just wear both, accompanied by a long winter coat! I saw one lady looking very hot and bothered but somehow didn’t think to take off the long trench coat she had draped over her perspiring back.
Agreeably it is hard to know what to do when the winter nights are coming to a close and the summer days, ever so slowly, creep upon us. When it’s neither hot nor cold, rainy or sunny, bright or dull? Do you leave the house in your cutest summer dress however carrying an umbrella and a woolly jumper in your back pocket just encase? Or, do you stand out side, before you get dressed out of your PJ’s, licking your finger and holding up grass to see which way it blows in an attempt to determine your wardrobe for the day based on a home made weather reading?
Stop the madness! Fear no more! I have scoured the Looking Glass website, in an attempt to find you wardrobe staples that will get you through the horrid, unpredictable ‘in between’ months!
Whilst the weather is sunny, yet still unpredictable, I would team the stunning Virginia dress with a dark blue denim skinny jean. I’d add plain coloured flat ballet shoes to the look, and accessorise with a brown leather vintage belt and brown leather satchel. When summer finally does arrive, id loose the jeans and belt, replace the ballet shoes for some on trend flat-fringed shoe boots, or some simple flip-flops and accessorise with looking glasses wood bead bracelet. If like me you’re a festivalgoer replace the flip-flops for heavy green wellies, woolly socks, and a wax jacket!! And for summer nights out on the town throw on some dangerously high, skin coloured, T-bar shoes, long sparkly earrings and red lips. However whilst the in between months are in full swing add thick black tights to this evening look.
Simple yet stunning dress requires nothing more but simple and stunning accessories. Perfect for a hot summers day, BBQ, tea party, social gathering, day out, I’d wear a simple flat natural colour ballet slipper, or white frill socks and a mid heel will also work. However this dress lends itself to the unpredictable weather too and whilst its still that little too cold in the evening to go ‘bare legs’ id team this dress with thick black tights, a garish red high heel and I’d finish the look with a vintage blue bag and red lips.
A look completely for the beach you think? Whilst the weather is still so unpredictable I would team this stunning summer piece with jeans and flats for the day. For the evening I’d add heels and a leather biker jacket for a night out in the pub!
On a summer holiday I would simply throw this over a bikini, or over a little black vest dress with black gladiator sandals and the wood bead neckless perfect for when the days draw to a close and you hit cocktail hour. However for the in between months I would fasten this stunning jacket over a white vest and blue jeans, a skinny or flared jean would lend its self to this look.
Hopefully I have solved some of your worries about what to wear during the unpredictable in between months, now hopefully you will no longer find yourself in a pondrey when you look out of window in the morning and see blue sky's but a stiff westerly wind!
